Thanks that did the trick.
For interest sake, in the end I used:
set_user_agent("Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)");
I also found http://www.useragent.org which prints your useragent, very helpful.
By default without anything being set, Conkeror returns:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.13) Gecko/2009082121
Still not really sure why sagepub.com does not like this.
