I pay for a VPS (virtual private server) from johncompanies.com. Why:
(1) I get my own dedicated IP address, (2) I get root access so I can
install anything I want and configure them however I like, so if I need
a particular webserver feature, I can install it myself instead of
needing to wait in line for customer service. (3) The company maintains
the physical servers, so I don't have to worry about buying expensive
equipment, installing cooling systems, redundant power backups, etc..
(4) They have very fast redundant T3 internet connectivity so network
applications like my website run pretty fast.

The price is pretty reasonable, too, for what I get out of it. Plus I
get a discount for contributing to open source projects. :)

You do need to know how to administrate a full-fledged Unix server,
though, and you need to keep an eye out for security updates -- I
neglected that once and got hacked. That was *not* fun. Besides that,
you get to play with high-end enterprise machines for a fraction of
their price, so it's a pretty good deal.

But if all you want is to host a website, you probably want to look
elsewhere, 'cos a full-fledged VPS probably is more costly than you're
willing to pay if the only thing you're going to use it for is a single
personal website. For me, I have some other stuff that I use it for
besides my website, so it's worth the price.

One of the services of the Language Creation Society is to provide its
members with free web hosting. Check

Using the LCS's offer, you probably can run nearly everything you want on
you webspace as long as it runs in userspace.

That is a first to me! I've never heard of a free hosting service that
requires people to give up copyright!

Hi all!

I've gone nomail again - off to Portiragnes in south France
for two weeks with my two sons and their families. We'll be
joined part of the time by my daughter & her husband from
t'other side of the Pond.

I suspect I'll be too busy to attempt to follow the list :)

Ciao!
