INTERRUPTED is definitely the wrong kind of exception to be throwing here.
INTERRUPTED exceptions are used only when the process is shutting down and the
thread should immediately terminate.
The general way exceptions should be handled is described in ManifoldCF in
Action in Chapter 5.
