It will assume knowledge of metal and organic conservation so as to focus on the problems specific to these types of objects. Participants will be conservators working with arms and armour collections and are expected to have knowledge of conservation treatments especially for wood and metal. The composition of a range of materials found in collections will be introduced and we will discuss the basic interactions of these materials with their surroundings. Students will examine a range of strategies, from technical to managerial, to understand and modify conditions to create acceptable levels of care for collections. The course will consider the process of environmental management, from the identification of environmental factors to be considered, targets, monitoring conditions and data capture, to the interpretation of results with subsequent action. It will cover how to provide the best environment, storage, mounting techniques and methods of display. The practical sessions are designed to give an opportunity for conservators to learn the best methods to apply to a range of botanical collections so that they may be able to utilise or adapt for future projects. The aim of the course is to promote discussion and raise awareness of the issues surrounding working with this material.
