I am looking for some guidance on the cleaning of wooden furniture that is displayed in a building with a working peat fire. The fire leaves a layer of soot over the furniture, but because the space can also be damp I am concerned that brushing or using cloths to remove it may do more harm than good. The smoke also coats the timbers of the roof with tar, which occasionally drips onto the furniture and is difficult to remove because it is sticky. Any advice or details of similar issues elsewhere would be gratefully received.
