Senior Manager: Paintings, Frames and Textile Conservation
This is an exciting time to join the Royal Museums Greenwich. We are moving
into new purpose built conservation studios in August 2017 which opens up a
whole range of opportunities and we are looking for a Senior Manager to manage
the paintings, frames and textile conservation studios. Part of the role is
develop public engagement activities at our new facility.

Textile Conservation Studio
Main responsibilities:
• Responsible for all aspects of the conservation and preservation of
the National Maritime Museum’s painting and textile collections and to develop
strategies for their care, treatment and research.
• To manage and provide effective leadership for Painting, Frame and
Textile conservation.
• To undertake practical conservation treatment in postholder’s
specialist area.
Main duties:
• Undertake management responsibility for the development and delivery
of a high quality and fully integrated service, ensuring the most efficient and
effective use of departmental resources.
• Direct and motivate staff to ensure the highest level of performance.
• Ensure that all work and documentation is undertaken to the
appropriate professional standards.
• Develop operational synergies which make best use of resources,
knowledge and experience across the Museum.
• Deliver high level conservation treatment and research in one of the
collection areas.
• Provide authoritative advice on display, storage, environment,
handling and transport of painting and textile collections.
• Contribute to the Museum’s digitisation and masterplan programmes.
• Be a member of the departmental management team, providing support to
the Head of Conservation & Preservation.
• Assist in the identification of potential funding sources and develop
funding bids in liaison with Head of Conservation & Preservation.
• Represent the Conservation department on cross-departmental projects
and undertake work related to delivering the Museum’s strategic objectives, as
required.
• Contribute to delivering an imaginative and innovative public
programme in line with the Museum’s strategic objectives.
• Plan and deliver where appropriate, programmes for student placement,
internships, training, development and research.
• Initiate and develop volunteer programmes where feasible and ensure
that all work is supervised, focussed and recognised in liasion with the
Museum’s Volunteer Manager.
• Undertake training and attend courses which will assist in the
development of skills.
• Provide high level professional support, advice and guidance to
trustees, directors, senior management and staff and recommend changes to
policies or procedures where necessary.
• Deputise for the Head of Conservation & Preservation where
appropriate.
• Represent the Museum at a regional, national and international level
and undertake other representational work on matters relating to museums.
• Undertake such other duties of similar nature that may be assigned
from time to time.
• Manage the Museum’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and
make a contribution to the continuance of a sound health and safety culture
within the section.
Skills and Experience:
Essential
• Appropriate degree or equivalent in Conservation.
• Experience of staff management.
• Experience of developing staff.
• Demonstrable experience of project and logistics management.
• Experience of strategic management, within a museum environment.
• Ability to work constructively with colleagues in other disciplines.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience of developing and running public outreach programme.
• Effective and pragmatic problem solving and analytical skills.
• Well developed IT skills including collections management systems.
• Good editorial skills.
• Ability to motivate staff to work for institutional objectives as
well as departmental ones.
Desirable
• Appropriate training in management.
• Specialist working knowledge and experience in one of the areas
covered by the post.
• National/international reputation within a stated specialist field.
• Accredited under PACR or willing to work towards accreditation.
• Experience of risk management.
• Experience of setting and managing a budget.
Terms and Conditions
Core hours of work will be 41 per week, 9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, with
an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management.
Salary: 35,000 – 45,000 GBP per annum
