CONSERVATION TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Cape Espenberg, Alaska

OVERVIEW

The Cape Espenberg Birnirk Project is looking for a graduate student in objects 
conservation to join the 2017 excavation in northwest Alaska, USA from mid-June 
to mid-August. This is a volunteer position with travel and accommodation costs 
provided.

POSITION

This international project is led by Dr. Claire Alix (Université Paris 1 - 
Panthéon Sorbonne) and Dr. Owen Mason (INSTAAR, Univ. of Colorado) and is 
funded by the US National Science Foundation and Ministry of Foreign Affairs 
(MEADI). The student will assist conservator Susanne Grieve in the field and 
participate in the excavation of a wooden house dated to the end of the first 
millennium AD (Birnirk culture). Activities will include stabilizing artifacts 
(both in situ and in the field laboratory), cataloguing and registration 
including digital documentation and packaging materials for transportation to 
the University of Alaska Fairbanks where they will be conserved and curated 
while under study. The student will work with a variety of material types 
(including wood, ivory, bone, antler, leather, baleen and lithics) and gain 
conservation experience in an Arctic environment with frozen materials. They 
will work with a professional conservator and multidisciplinary team of experts 
in a collaborative atmosphere.

REQUIREMENTS

Current student or recent graduate (within 5 years) of a cultural heritage 
conservation program or related field of study. Ability to perform job related 
functions such as lifting 30 pounds and maneuvering in an archaeological 
environment. Excellent working knowledge of English. Must be willing to spend 
eight weeks in camping conditions with accommodation in an individual tent and 
contribute to occasional camp chores.
