Hello everybody,
We recently received a donation of a beautiful mid-19th century volume for our special collections. Before it was transferred to us, the donor's appraiser applied what he says was Meltonian Leather Balm. The black leather case is now coated with a sooty, oily black film that smudges everything it comes into contact with. I spent 30 minutes buffing it with a clean soft cloth and it still leaves my fingers black when I handle it. I've never seen anything like this. Does anybody know what might be happening here or if there's anything I might do in-house to fix it? Its current grimy condition is a threat to the wonderful illustrations inside as well as any items it might come into contact with.
