Good day, A client of ours has a commemorative monument with bronze letters fixed to a granite plaque. Each letter has a couple of short pins corresponding to small holes (about 1/8") in the granite. It seems that initially, the letters were held in place with lead, but more recently (at least several years ago) most letters have been glued into place with what looks like epoxy.
Currently, the adhesive is failing and some letters have been pried off. We will be telling them to have the missing letters molded and recast, and the original letters secured, but I am not sure if there is some kind of consensus in the conservation world about what material to use for adhering the letters securely. Does anyone has an adhesive to suggest? Lead is not really an option anymore. I'm worried epoxy will fail rapidly again. We've been thinking about a latex modified thin set mortar in the holes only.
