Aplea to IIC members everywhere.

Caroline K. Keck (1908-2007) was the first woman invited to deliver the IIC
ForbesPrize lecture. She delivered her talk during the 1978 IIC Congress, held
in Oxford, England. Although I attended that Congress, I missed the Forbes
Prize Lecture because it was delivered during the evening that I spend with my
husband and our young children, who by then were feeling abandoned. I am aware
of how pleased and honored Mrs. Keck felt, to be invited to present a Forbes
Prize Lecture, but I have almost no information about the impression she made
while speaking. What was/were her main theme/s? Did she just talk, or also show
slides? Did the audience seem generally appreciative, disgruntled, or simply
bored?

If you (or someone you know) were present when Mrs. Keck delivered the Forbes
Prize lecture at the 1978 IIC Congress -- I want to hear from you!

I am well along in writing a fact-based non-fiction biography of the Sheldon
and Caroline Keck, which of course will mention Mrs. Keck's Forbes Prize
Lecture. By offering to share in the book (anonymously, if you wish) your
recollection of that occasion, you will help me describe how it felt to be
present then. That's important, because including first-person anecdotes
throughout the life stories of those two formerly famous conservators may make
this conservation-history biography appeal to a broader audience. I am heeding
Caroline Keck's oft-repeated plea for conservators to do some advocating for
our field.

Responses will be greatly appreciated, whether posted on this list or sent to
me directly.

Sincerely,
