Are you a qualified archives conservator who specialises in paper and parchment?
Do you have excellent knowledge of preservation and collections care?
Do you enjoy working with a wide range of stakeholders including volunteers and
external customers?
Can you give talks and demonstrations which inspire and interest?
Then Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS) is looking for you. HALS
is looking for two qualified conservators with paper and parchment specialism
to join the Archive Collections Team.
The Conservator will lead on archives conservation by undertaking practical
conservation on our archive collections ranging from the Medieval to the
present day.
You will lead on preservation including environmental monitoring and archive
storage and play an integral role in our business continuity and disaster
planning.
You will line manage the Archive Library Assistant (Document Services) and
devise and supervise volunteer preservation projects.
The Project Conservator will lead on HALS chargeable services such as external
conservation work, conservation for digitisation and exhibition loan liaising
with the Conservator as necessary. The Project Conservator will work on
externally funded projects. It is envisaged that external work will be carried
out in the HALS conservation studio. This flexible role would be ideal for
someone who is able to balance it with existing commitments.
You will both have an opportunity to contribute to HALS learning and access
programme through the delivery of interesting and inspiring talks and practical
guidance to staff, volunteers and public.
Both roles require a recognised qualification in paper conservation (covering
conservation of books and documents) and an excellent knowledge of the
appropriate conservation methods, preservation and collections care for a wide
range of physical media including paper, parchment and photographs.
You will use your effective communication and ICT skills to prioritise your
workload to meet deadlines and agreed targets, including in the preparation of
conservation assessments for customers.  HALS currently uses CALM for
cataloguing and conservation reports and experience of this would be an
advantage.
This is an exciting time to join us following award of Accredited status by the
National Archives in July and as we continue to deliver our 10 year 'Shared
Heritage' strategy.
In return we can offer the chance to develop your skills working with a range
of materials from medieval deeds to modern books, whilst working for an
organisation that values its employees and invests in training, and a Career
Development Scheme.
