Conservation Scientist PhD, CATS at SMK, Copenhagen

The Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation (CATS) at Statens 
Museum for Kunst (SMK), the National Gallery of Denmark, wishes to appoint a 
researcher in conservation science. The position is for 12 months with a 
possibility for prolongation if further funding is provided.

The analytical focus will be on artists' materials and techniques, and on the 
deterioration of materials. Working closely with the other Conservation 
Scientist at SMK, the researcher will interact with the conservation and 
curatorial departments alike.

Responsibilities: 
Participate in conservation-driven research for the benefit of collections care 
as well as being an active participant in the development and implementation of 
a strong conservation science program within SMK-CATS.  
Research focus should be on non-destructive analytical techniques including 
XRF, UV-Vis-NIR reflectance, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. 
Undertake research into materials and techniques of a wide range of objects 
within the visual arts and presenting and publishing the results 
internationally. 
Examination and analysis of works of art using specialized equipment, and the 
documentation and interpretation of results. 
Supervising and coordinating interns at SMK-CATS. 
Maintenance of the laboratory equipment; assisting and coordinating technicians 
in solving any potential problems. 
Participation in the acquisition of new instruments and upgrade of the 
laboratory facilities. 
Acting as a representative for SMK-CATS in national and international fora. 
Excellent mastering of English as work language is essential.

Qualifications: 
PhD in chemistry/physical sciences/conservation science with significant 
experience in analytical chemistry and materials identification, relating to 
art and artefacts.  
Knowledge of art and art history is desirable, as is the ability to disseminate 
and communicate the subject matter of scientific research to a non-technical 
audience. Experience in a museum environment or collaborations with 
conservators is not mandatory but will be taken into consideration. 
The candidate must have a strong interest in collaborative research since close 
collaboration with other conservation scientists and conservators from other 
institutions is expected.  
 
Salary and employment conditions: 
The position is open for engagement as soon as possible and the working hours 
are 37 per week.
Salary and other employment conditions is in accordance with agreement between 
the Ministry of Finance and Danish Association of Masters and PhDs and rules 
regarding research staff under the Danish Ministry of Culture. 
You will be employed as "Project researcher" according to above mentioned rules.
