Dear colleagues,

we are an archaeological department in Switzerland and have lots of wall
painting fragments in our collection. The size of the pieces are approx. 1-10
square centimeters and they will not be mounted. Until now we stored the
fragments in boxes on polyethylene foam padded with tissue paper. But with this
method the fragments either easily hit each other or the packing is very time
consuming.
We now think about embedding the fragments in expanded perlite (without
binder). This would be similar to embedding them in sand, but it's not so heavy.

Do you have any concerns about perlite? In the literature I could find perlite
only as a filler (e.g. for mortar) or for short term storage.

Thank you for your help and kind regards,
