Postgraduate Associate Position in Photograph Research and Conservation at Yale's Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage
The Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH) and the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) are seeking applications for a paid, full-time, 12-month fellowship (referred to as postgraduate associate position) to begin on or after July 1, 2018 (starting date negotiable). The fellowship may be renewable for a second year. The postgraduate associate will collaborate with scientists at IPCH, as well as with curators and conservators at the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) on a research project on 19th century photographic materials, which involves their characterization and study of their aging and degradation. Additional research and conservation activities will draw on the diverse photography collections of the YCBA. The successful candidate will assist conservation staff in the examination, documentation, and treatment of collection materials in preparation for exhibitions and loans. The postgraduate associate position is designed to offer an emerging conservator the opportunity to engage in research design and execution, including the use of instrumental analysis/testing techniques and data analysis. The outcomes of the research project are expected to be disseminated to public and scholarly audiences via presentations and/or a publication and possibly through other outreach efforts. The postgraduate associate will play an integral role in planning and carrying out these dissemination goals. About the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Researchers at IPCH perform a diverse range of laboratory procedures and techniques aimed at the study of objects in Yale's cultural heritage and natural history collections and the study of changes that materials in these objects undergo as part of aging and degradation processes. The postgraduate associate will join a dynamic scientific research community and well-equipped laboratories situated next to a conservation laboratory and collection storage facilities. Set within Yale's vibrant academic community, which offers excellent research support infrastructure, this position leverages the unique scientific expertise at IPCH, close collaboration with Yale's conservation and preservation community, and connectivity to the greater conservation community in North America and beyond.
