Hello,

I would like to advertise this upcoming symposium in the Conservation DistList:

Textiles from the Silk Road in Museum Collections - Scientific Investigations
and Conservation Challenges

The BM Mellon symposia: a series of symposia in Conservation Science held with
support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

10 December 2018, The British Museum, London, UK

The Department of Scientific Research of the British Museum will host a one-day
symposium on 10 December 2018 about the investigation of Asian textiles in
museum collections. A particular focus is intended on Chinese textiles, but
contributions covering other geographical provenances along the Silk Road are
welcome. The symposium will be organised with the support of the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation and will feature scientific research recently carried out on
Dunhuang textiles from the British Museum's collection. The symposium aims to
bring together professionals with different expertise in the study of Asian
textiles and create discussions about how to approach the investigation,
conservation and display of these objects.
The workshop will explore different approaches and analytical techniques to the
study of weaving, fibres and dyes in Asian textiles. Comparisons between the
information that can be obtained with non-invasive and invasive approaches are
encouraged. The use of microscopic, spectroscopic and mass spectrometric
techniques is in line with the focus of the workshop.
The symposium will be conducted in English and will be free of charge, thanks
to funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Registration will be needed
and details will be available in due course. Due to the limited number of oral
presentations that can be fit in one day, a poster session will be organised as
well.
Further details are present at http://www.bm-mellon-symposia.org/
The symposium is organised by Dr Diego Tamburini, Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral
Research Fellow at the British Museum.
