The Koerner Fellowship program, generously supported by the Michael and Sonja Koerner Conservation Initiatives Fund at the AGO, provides advanced training for emerging conservation professionals who have recently completed their studies. The newly established Fellowship, to be offered on an annual basis, will focus on painting conservation for 2018-2019. We hope that the position offered below provides the Fellow with the opportunity to gain in depth professional conservation experience in a museum setting and offers a real opportunity to introduce new and exciting ideas to the Gallery to create a positive impact on our growth and development. We're currently seeking a recent Conservation Master's degree graduate to join our Conservation team. Applicants should have at least one year of experience, preferably in a museum setting, beyond completion of the master's degree in fine art conservation, but no more than 5 years experience following graduation. This placement provides an advanced training experience essential to the development of a conservation emerging professional. What you will do: Under supervision of the Head of Conservation and Assistant Painting Conservator, the fellow will participate in the following activities with assigned works from the AGO permanent collection: * Assessment, condition reporting and documentation of paintings * Examination of works with the aid of technical equipment, including multispectral imaging * Research and technical examination of paintings * Development of treatment protocol * Executing and documenting treatment * Participation in daily activities of Conservation Department * Fellows will be encouraged to publish or present their research at the end of the fellowship What we're looking for: * Must have recently graduated with a master's degree from a recognized conservation training program, with no more than 5 years of experience following graduation * Candidate must be a Canadian citizen, or currently eligible to work in Canada, or eligible to work in Canada through SWAP or International Experience Canada (First preference given to Canadians and those currently eligible to work in Canada) * Good theoretical and practical experience in conservation * Good hand skill and visual discrimination abilities * Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English * Demonstrated interest in research Benefit for the Fellow: * This fellowship provides advanced training in Conservation that is necessary for an emerging professional to successfully pursue a career in Conservation. Close mentoring by AGO Conservation staff will help supplement conservation training and refine skills at a high level. * The successful candidate will receive a CAD$42,000 stipend for the 1-year placement, with a CAD $3000 allowance for professional development and research travel. * Free access to the gallery during operational hours. * Able to receive benefits from the city and provincial reciprocal agreements.
