A ten-year reservicing project for the fabric of Buckingham Palace is underway, during which time Royal Collection Trust items normally housed in the palace will be decanted and stored for anywhere between three to five years on a rolling basis. The current plan is for books to be packed in crates or boxes and these then moved to be stacked in a climate controlled storage space. Does anyone have experience of crating up volumes like this for some years? Any advice would be most welcome, particularly on the best materials and methods of packing to use, as well as how to ensure good environmental conditions within the containers. Or should we try to insist that the books are unpacked and shelved in the storage area if this is at all possible?
