Assistant Textile Conservator (temporary) at National Museums Scotland

£25,050 - £27,238 per annum plus membership of Civil Service pension scheme

Thanks to funding from Baillie Gifford Investment Managers an exciting
opportunity has arisen for a temporary Assistant Textile Conservator to join
our busy and dynamic conservation team. Caring for our internationally
significant collections of over 12 million items, you'll bring your expert
conservation knowledge to our acclaimed exhibitions, displays and loans
programmes.

The Textile Conservation team works across many disciplines including costume,
decorative arts, military, ethnographic and Scottish history collections. This
work can be carried out at any of the NMS sites.

Reporting to the Principal Conservator, Textile Conservation, you will be a
highly practical conservator with a background in textile conservation. You
will be able to demonstrate experience of conserving a range of textile objects
and have a practical understanding of materials and treatments. You will be
informed and knowledgeable about current textile conservation practices and
aware of professional conservation issues and best practice. You will ideally
be trained to degree level in a relevant subject, plus a professional
conservation related qualification and able to demonstrate relevant work
experience. A good communicator, you will be organised, methodical and adept at
problem solving.

You should have a recognised conservation qualification and be able to work
independently on the examination and treatment of objects, and advise on how to
safely display and store them. This includes documenting conservation treatment
and the condition of objects, so good IT skills are required. You will be a
team player, who is able to work to tight deadlines and effectively plan,
prioritise and risk assess your work programme. You will also have a passion
for conservation and be able to communicate this to our audiences.
