Associate Objects Conservator


The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Associate Objects Conservator 
to fill an 18-month term position primarily focused on the treatment of 
Japanese Buddhist sculpture during gallery renovations. The project will 
include significant public outreach and interaction working in view of the 
public.



Essential Functions:

• Carry out examination and treatment of wooden Japanese Buddhist sculpture 
during a gallery renovation.

• Carry out research in support of treatments as needed.

• Fully document all work in writing and through photography.

• Perform all work in accordance with AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for 
Practice and following departmental standards in MFA’s collections database 
system.

• Work collaboratively with curators, mountmakers, designers, collections care, 
and other staff.

• Share findings and conservation process with curators, educators, gallery 
instructors, and the public.

• Supervise other staff as directed.

• Perform additional tasks in support of conservation activities in the Objects 
Lab as needed.



Qualifications:

• Applicants must have a Master’s degree with a specialization in objects 
conservation from a recognized conservation training program, or equivalent 
experience.

• At least seven years of post-training experience is preferred.

• Familiarity with the treatment of Asian sculpture and/or related materials 
(polychromy, lacquer, wood) is preferred. Familiarity with a wide variety of 
other materials is also desirable.

• Strong hand skills and excellent written and communication skills are 
essential.

• Demonstrated commitment to public outreach and education.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Experience with digital photography, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and 
Microsoft Excel.
