Conserving the ephemeral: Light

9-10th May, 2019
Tomar Polytechnic Institute, Tomar, Portugal

Light - a central ‘element’ throughout human’s history to and in ‘art making’,
perception and appreciation ranges from the inclusion of actual light, the
lighting of artworks, how a light source might interact with an artwork, the
use of reflections, and using light itself as an artistic medium.

While the artist’s utilisation of light as an element contributes to the
aesthetic appreciation and expression of the manifested intent and integrity of
the art work, the conservator’s encounter with this ephemeral medium is
traditionally restricted to the physical nature of light as electromagnetic
radiation and specific ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum applied to the
scientific analysis for qualitative and quantitative investigation of media and
to inform preventive measures for light exposure of light sensitive media for
exhibition display.

This meeting aims to focus on light as the artist’s ephemeral ‘material’ and
invites abstracts for contributions that explore and examine considerations of
materiality, and methods of recording, preservation and reconstruction of
‘light’ as an intrinsic element to the overall art work and how these may
impact, determine and shape conventional conservation approaches and practices
to works of art, such as:

- Polychrome, gilded, decorated surfaces of sculpture (wood, stone, metal)
- Architectural surface decorations: Interiors (historic and contemporary)
- Contemporary sculpture and Installation Art (excluding time based media)

Abstracts should not exceed more than 500 words and state author(s) name,
affiliation, and contact details for correspondence.

The abstract should also include a title and up to six keywords.

The authors are asked to indicate on the file name the last name of the main
author and if the abstract is intended for an oral or a poster communication
(for example SMITH_Communication or SMITH_Poster).

Please submit your 500 word abstract by the 14th October 2018 to:
[email protected]
