I teach Materials Characterization at Johns Hopkins University. This is an undergraduate course taught in the engineering department. I am looking for a few samples that the students might use to characterize as the basis of a month long project. The techniques that we have access to include: SEM with EDS, XRD, Optical microscopy, XRF, Raman, IR, UV/Vis, Rheometer, Contact angle, colorimeter, and AFM. Mechanical testing (tensile tester, nanoindenter, MIT fold endurance) is also available and other characterization techniques (such as XPS) are available on a limited basis depending on the sample. I am looking for a few (2-4) samples - that can be destroyed in our testing - that someone might be interested in knowing more about. Examples that the students have previously looked at include glass, wood and paper identification, corrosion products, ink and paint analysis. Ideally the work would include contact with the student group (via skype, phone, or email) so the students can stay focused on what the goal is and what they are finding. On completion of the project, the student report will be forwarded to the sample owner. We will need the samples by mid-October.
