_The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and
antiquities of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a
million objects in its care. The Department of Manuscripts and Printed
Books (MSSPB) preserves one of the finest collections of illuminated
manuscripts in the world, dating from the tenth to the sixteenth
century, as well as significant collections of printed books, music, and
archives.
The successful candidate will join a team of six conservators attached
to curatorial departments, a collections care conservator and a research
scientist, all working under the Head of Conservation. The Hamilton Kerr
Institute (HKI) for paintings conservation is a department of the
Fitzwilliam, with its own Director, who is also Assistant Director
(Conservation) of the Fitzwilliam. The Museum conservators and staff
of the HKI form the Fitzwilliam Museum Conservation Division.
The purpose of this role is to maintain the Fitzwilliam Museum's MSSPB
collections and the University's national and international reputation
for excellence in teaching and research. Contribution to excellence for
research will be as a member of the Museum's Conservation and MSSPB
teams carrying out preventive and interventive conservation treatment,
and, through practice, research into the collections under the guidance
of the Conservator of Manuscripts and Printed Books, in consultation
with relevant MSSPB and other Museum staff. MSSPB has a special link
with Trinity College and provides conservation services to the Wren
Library. Some of this work may be delegated to the Assistant
Conservator. Typical material for treatment includes medieval and
Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, fine printed books dating from the
15th to the 21st century, manuscript and printed music, literary
autographs and archival material, paper, parchment and bindings.
Candidates should hold a relevant qualification in book conservation, or
have equivalent experience, and should have a current demonstrable track
record of practical treatment of bound material, preferably in
collections comparable to those in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Wren
Library.
A collaborative, supportive and flexible team working style is
essential. The ability to deal with people at all levels and in a
professional manner is crucial. An organised and efficient approach is
required to work in a small studio space.
