I need an advice on a fragment of a Roman transport amphora that contains a faded inscription. The writing needs to be consolidated. EDS analysis indicates that it was probably made with an organic black pigment.
The colleagues charged with this task are considering to use Acril 33, Acril ME or Paraloid B72. In the case of Paraloid B72, they say that the graffiti can turn darker, and the ceramic as well. (It is very important that consolidation does not diminish the legibility of the writing.) They propose to use a 3-4 % consolidant solution and, if necessary, to increase the concentration in the second coat. They would apply the consolidant on the letters with a brush, and consolidate the rest of the fragment by immersion. Has anyone treated a similar object? What consolidant and method of application would you propose? Any advise or guidance would be greatly appreciated. ****** Unsubscribe by sending a message to [email protected] Searchable archives: http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/
