Greetings all, Please excuse any cross posting. We would like to advertise an Associate Textile Conservator position at The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum and are welcoming applications through February 15, 2019.
Full info including salary range and how to apply can be found at www.gwu.jobs, title ‘Associate Conservator <https://www.gwu.jobs/postings/64838>’ posting #S007917, but a little background is provided below: The Textile Museum was established in 1925 and its collection holds over 21,000 objects representing five millennia with its strongest holdings from the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia and Central and South America. Recent grant funding supports increased work in the contemporary textile arts community as well. In 2014, the museum joined The George Washington University to establish a new museum called The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. The joint museum also holds a small paper collection of prints and maps, the Washingtoniana collection. This position works closely with the chief conservator and the second associate conservator primarily to prepare textile exhibitions, i.e. assess, treat, mount, install and de-install textile objects as well as project manage conservation aspects of exhibition planning including loan projects. Preventive conservation tasks also fall under this position: assessment and rehousing of new accessions as well as shared responsibility for environmental monitoring and integrated pest management. There is increasing opportunity and encouragement of research especially as the museum has joined a university. Generous grant funding is enabling the department to fully upgrade and expand equipment within its main lab and smaller gallery lab, and this position will participate in onboarding of a diverse array of new equipment. While the position works exclusively with textile collections, the joint museum now holds a smaller paper collection and the storage center houses a portion of the university's fine and decorative art collections, so familiarity with a variety of mediums is an asset. This position primarily works in the Ashburn, Virginia Avenir Foundation Conservation and Collections Resource Center but installation, de-installation and a portion of environmental monitoring and IPM duties take place at the Washington DC Foggy Bottom gallery site. Candidates must have a degree from a recognized graduate level conservation program and a minimum of 2 but more ideally 4-5 years post graduate experience in a conservation setting.
