The Getty Conservation Institute is pleased to announce the publication of "Concrete: Case Studies in Conservation Practice," edited by Susan Macdonald and Catherine Croft.
"Concrete: Case Studies in Conservation Practice" is the first book in a new GCI series "Conserving Modern Heritage." The series, an outcome of the GCI's Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative, brings together case studies that demonstrate suitable approaches and solutions to some of the conservation challenges specific to modern heritage. This first volume was conceived as a way to help bridge the information gap and contribute toward development of a cohort of practitioners across the world who are well equipped to meet the challenges of conserving the twentieth-century's most ubiquitous building material, concrete. The book presents twelve large and two smaller conservation projects undertaken over the last ten years that demonstrate approaches to the conservation of significant concrete buildings and structures. Included are case studies on projects ranging from Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation, London's National Theatre, and the New York Hall of Science, to the Listening Mirrors in Kent and a sculpture by Donald Judd. All follow a rigorous conservation approach, beginning with a process of investigation and diagnosis to identify causes and target repairs, balanced with conservation requirements to preserve significance. Susan Macdonald is head of the GCI's Buildings and Sites department and oversees the Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative. Catherine Croft is Director of the Twentieth Century Society. The book is available for $59.95 USD. https://shop.getty.edu/products/concrete-case-studies-in-conservation-practice-978-1606065761 Anna Duer Research Associate The Getty Conservation Institute 1200 Getty Center Drive, Suite 700 Los Angeles CA 90049-1684 310-440-6710 ****** Unsubscribe by sending a message to [email protected] Searchable archives: http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/
