The Getty Conservation Institute is pleased to announce the publication of "Sam Francis: The Artist's Materials," by Debra Burchett-Lere and Aneta Zebala.
"Sam Francis: The Artist's Materials" is the fifth book in the GCI's "Artist's Materials" series, which publishes in-depth research into the materials and techniques of significant twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists. Previous books in the series discuss Willem de Kooning (2010 and now in its second printing), Jean Paul Riopelle (2011), Lucio Fontana (2012) and Hans Hofmann (2016). The American artist Sam Francis (1923-1994), an Abstract Expressionist, was best known for his large-scale and vibrant, color-saturated canvas paintings. Sometimes called a "painterly abstractionist," he was influenced both by modern colorists such as Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky and by American contemporaries like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Francis was prolific, creating over 1,900 paintings as well as thousands of works on paper, prints, and monotypes. This volume is the culmination of a long-standing research collaboration between the GCI and the Sam Francis Foundation. The project was part of the GCI's Modern and Contemporary Art Research Initiative, which addresses the complex challenges relating to artists' materials that face conservators and cultural institutions today. The proximity of the GCI to the artist's studio in Santa Monica and the Sam Francis Foundation in Pasadena helped foster a close working relationship between the two institutions and facilitated the research project, which took shape when the GCI agreed to conduct an in-depth analysis of more than sixty pots of paint found in the artist's Santa Monica studio after his death. Another important connection between the Sam Francis Foundation and the Getty was forged with the donation of the artist's archive to the Getty Research Institute in 2004. Debra Burchett-Lere is a curator and executive director of the Sam Francis Foundation. Aneta Zebala is a paintings conservator and founder of Zebala & Partners. The book is available for $40 USD. https://shop.getty.edu/products/sam-francis-the-artist-s-materials-978-1606065839 Anna Duer Research Associate The Getty Conservation Institute 1200 Getty Center Drive, Suite 700 Los Angeles CA 90049-1684 310-440-6710 ****** Unsubscribe by sending a message to [email protected] Searchable archives: http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/
