Conservator of Works on Paper - Independent Contractor


The Aga Khan Museum (AKM) in Toronto, Canada offers visitors a window into 
worlds unknown or unfamiliar: the artistic, intellectual, and scientific 
heritage of Muslim civilizations across the centuries from the Iberian 
Peninsula to China. Its mission is to foster a greater understanding and 
appreciation of the contribution that Muslim civilizations have made to world 
heritage. Through education, research, and collaboration, the Museum will 
inform and inspire audiences from all cultures by presenting art created in the 
Muslim world throughout the past fourteen centuries, along with current paths 
of artistic practice and cultural development.



Purpose of Position

Under the oversight of the Collections Manager, the Conservator will provide 
assessment, treatment and documentation relating to the Aga Khan Museum’s 
objects collection with a primary focus on paper works and paper-based 
artifacts, with consultancy support on incoming loans. It is expected that the 
work will be carried out by the Conservator who is accredited by the Canadian 
Association of Professional Conservators, in a competent, conscientious and 
professional manner in accordance with policies and procedures of the Aga Khan 
Museum and the standards of practice as outlined in the Code of Ethics and 
Guidance for Practice from The Canadian Association for Conservation.



Key Responsibilities

• Perform conservation treatments on a wide-range of historic and archival 
Works on Paper from the Collection of the Aga Khan Museum. Provide full written 
and photographic documentation in accordance with the CAC and CAPC Code of 
Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.

• Perform conservation treatments of the artworks selected for Rotations in the 
Permanent Galleries, Exhibitions, and loan objects if necessary.

• Provide technical advice on the housing, storage, handling and repair of both 
Permanent and Special Collections. Advise museum staff on conservation 
principles and practices.

• Maintain lab statistics. Maintain treatment records and reporting systems. 
Track and maintain supplies; evaluate and recommend tools and equipment.

• Train other conservator staff.

• Participate in disaster response planning and recovery initiatives.

• Participate in collection surveys and multi-divisional and 
multi-institutional grant-funded projects.

• Assist with preventive programs such as environmental monitoring and pest 
management as needed.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.



Qualifications & Experience

• Master’s degree in conservation or related field.

• Extensive knowledge of current conservation principles and practices, and 
materials science.

 • Demonstrated ability to perform high-quality conservation treatments on 
general and special collections materials, primarily works on paper.

• Ability to communicate effectively about treatment options and decisions.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel

• Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) or similar collections database 
Preferred qualifications

• Three years or more of post-graduate work in a library, archive, or museum 
preservation department.

• Membership in the CAC, AIC, Professional Associate membership preferred.

• Experience working with books and manuscripts.

• Knowledge of Islamic Art is an asset
