Summer Conservation Fellow position at the Portland Art Museum Are you knowledgeable about museum collections, photographic processes, preservation issues, conservation treatment, and data collection? Do you seek to join an encouraging shared learning environment? We urge you to join us for an 8-week competitively paid internship, for the summer of 2019. Fellows will have a strong interest in conservation, photography, humanities, fine art, and dynamic project teams.
Through funding by the National Endowment for the Humanities the conservation and collections team plans to undertake a thorough conservation assessment of the photography portion of the Northwest Art collection. This survey will establish a paradigm upon which future photography surveys can be built. We seek someone who loves to learn, works well in a demanding work environment, is adaptable, and understands the importance of collection surveys. You will attend and assist with an on-site four day workshop led by Jennifer McGlinchey-Sexton with museum staff, assist the associated Conservator and Registrar with planning, data collection, data entry, and final reporting. The workshop will include: an introduction to photographic processes, practice with looking at known prints; practice writing condition summaries and assigning condition priorities; review of survey protocol; and UV lecture with hands on practice and photo-documentation techniques. Working side by side with staff, including conservator, registrars, art handlers, collection manager, and curator, the learning environment is crafted for the Fellow to enhance skills including art handling, in depth examination, process identification, treatment assessment, and treatment pricing estimation as appropriate. Being closely involved in this process will allow for development of time management and team building skills. This position is full-time, working for 8 weeks from June to August with some flexibility on start dates. Compensation is budgeted at $18.00 per hour. This position is eligible for a variety of perks such as free Museum admission, Gift Shop discounts, and screenings at the NW Film Center. Please see our website for more details.
