I am a second year conservation student at the Courtauld and I am
considering doing my third year research project on 19th century
oil paintings over enlarged photographs on canvas. After the invention of
the solar camera this process became very popular because they allowed to
project an enlargement of a small photograph onto a sensitized paper or
canvas that would then be painted in oil to create life size portraits,
sometimes even full length, so they combined the fidelity and speed
of photography with the finish of a traditional oil painting.

I am particularly interested in this technique made onto canvas, but so far
I haven’t been able to find any examples because it is hard to tell the
presence of a photograph under the paint layers so many of
these photo-paintings haven’t yet been identified as such in many cases.

I would like to know if you have come across a painting on canvas with this
technique or if you are aware of any photo painting in a public collection,
preferable in the UK.

Many thanks! I very much appreciate your help.

Best wishes,

Luz
