Over several years we have had reports from NCS member archives and libraries of problems experienced when material is sent off-site for digitisation by an outsourced provider, or sometimes when the provider comes to work on-site. Problems related include damage to items, pest contamination and fears over environment, fire standards and security. We have not found any clear, published standards specifically for the conservation of collections undergoing digitisation so have drafted a short and succinct set of standards for consultation.
We would very much welcome comments on the draft standard from conservators, archivists, librarians and others. If you would like to receive a copy of the draft standard and comment on it, please email us at [email protected] Once we have a document that we think can be used, we will invite digitisation companies to consider seeking to meet the standard and will give an NCS Quality Mark designation against any that do following assessment. Any published standard document we produce will be made available free of charge to archives, libraries and museums. _____________________________________________________________ Chris Woods PGDipCons BAhons CertCons RMARA ACR FIIC Director National Conservation Service 21 Albemarle Street Mayfair London W1S 4BS www.ncs.org.uk tel: 07495949170 NCS membership is operated by Nationwide Conservation Service Ltd, a not-for-profit membership company limited by guarantee, registered in England & Wales no. 07077608, VAT reg. 202361951.
