*PAPER DOCUMENTS CONSERVATION and PAPER CONSERVATION*
8th July – 2nd August 2019
Theoretical lessons in the Benedettucci Library, will support the studying
and analysing of paper objects using the unique historical documents stored
within the collection.
Students will be taken through the most relevant steps of the paper
conservation history and historical paper making techniques. Students will
be able to discover and recognise the secrets of the Italian paper making,
the composition of writing materials from antiquity and Middle Age until
present days and the deterioration of those materials.
In the workshop, through practice exercises, students will learn how to
slow and reduce deterioration processed related to paper based objects and
the medias.
What to do to and how to improve the long-term conservation of paper
documents
Which are the steps in restoring and conserving paper documents and how to
make sure the information these supports holds are saved and preserved.
The principles and practices of paper-based documents conservation, the
procedures and techniques of preventative conservation will be examined in
depth.
There will be daily lessons from 10am to 12am and from 03pm to 06pm:
theoretical lessons introducing the different problems and themes of paper
conservation supported by practical exercises carried out on carefully
chosen documents to help the students to understand and gain confidence in
how to work on a very vulnerable and delicate heritage object, the original
physical paper document.

• Why conserve?
• How to conserve? Suitable materials and techniques.
• Paper making. Paper’s qualities, behaviours and inherited degradation.
• Composition of writing and drawing materials (inks and pigments).
• Paper materials deterioration causes. From dust to oxidation of paper and
inks.
• Environment and climate role. Temperature, humidity, pollution, radiation.
• Conservation principles. Boundaries and possibilities.
• Conservation techniques. Theoretical knowledge and the purpose of
conservation treatments.
• ‘The Virtues’ of the Paper Conservator.
