Course:
*CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF CERAMIC ARTEFACTS and ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND
ANCIENT CERAMIC*.
3rd June – 28th June 2019

The course is designed to introduce students to technical features and
scientific investigation concerning the conservation of ancient ceramic
artworks.

Thanks to the support and collaboration with the Macerata Diocese the
students will witness and participate during the course to restoration
activities carried out onto a selected number of ceramic artefacts chosen
from the ‘Museo Diocesano’ collections.

Each trainee will also be able to carry out a conservation and restoration
work\project on a modern ceramic artefact chosen from a not historical
value collection.

Theoretical lessons:

·         Documentation and management of conservation data related to
graphic and photographic mapping.

·         Overview on ceramic typologies

·         Crafting techniques of ceramic artefacts

·         Preventive conservation on ceramic artefacts

·         Chemical-physical decay processes of ceramic artefacts

·         Restoration and conservation techniques

·         Care and maintenance guidelines for ceramic artefacts

Practical training:

Week 1: Preventive conservation in museums and documentation/condition
assessment

Week 2: Conservation of ceramic artefacts: Historical manufacturing
techniques.

Week 3: Conservation of ceramic artefacts: Conservation condition
assessment/planning and restoration treatments

Week 4: Conservation of ceramic artefacts: Exhibition preparation and
display within exhibition cases

Program Objectives

Theoretical lectures on chemical physical decay processes for metal objects
 with lectures on technical features with a wide practical training in
laboratory will update and upgrade  student’s skills in conservation and
restoration of metal.

Teaching includes lectures on preventive conservation within museum
environments, with field trips.

Lectures will include documentation and management of conservation data
related to graphic and photographic mapping.

Lectures will be carried out on the base of an interactive method with a
wide cooperation between teachers and students.

The four-week program will be tailored making sure there will be enough
time for the students to gain enough practical experience. All the
practical exercises will be undertaken under constant supervision of a
senior conservator- restorer with ISCR degree to act as expert /tutor.
