Course:
*CONSERVATION OF METAL AND ALLOYS ARTEFACTS and HISTORICAL SILVER ARTWORKS.*
8th July – 2nd August 2019

The course’s main topics are outlined for a basic level approach to
introduce the technical features and the scientific investigation
concerning the conservation of metals and alloys artworks.

The training will be aimed to conservation and restoration of historical
silver and copper alloy artefacts.

Thanks to the collaboration with the Museo Diocesano the activity of the
course will include the restoration works of a selected number of
Historical silver and copper alloy ecclesiastical vessels and furnishing
from the museum and storage collections to be held in the conservation
laboratory.

Theoretical lessons:

Documentation and management of conservation data related to graphic and
photographic mapping.
History and crafting techniques of historical silver artefacts
Preventive conservation and maintenance of historical precious alloys
artefacts
Chemical-physical decay processes applied to metal conservation
Restoration and conservation techniques
Care and maintenance guidelines for metal artefacts

Practical training:

Week 1: Preventive conservation in museums and documentation/condition
assessment

Week 2: Conservation of metals and alloys: Historical
manufacturing/techniques of execution

Week 3: Conservation of metals and alloys: Assessment of conditions and
restoration treatments

Week 4: Conservation of metal and alloys: Exhibition preparation and
display within exhibition cases

Program Objectives

Theoretical lectures on chemical physical decay processes for metal objects
 with lectures on technical features with a wide practical training in
laboratory will update and upgrade  student’s skills in conservation and
restoration of metal.

Teaching includes lectures on preventive conservation within museum
environments, with field trips.

Lectures will include documentation and management of conservation data
related to graphic and photographic mapping.

Lectures will be carried out on the base of an interactive method with a
wide cooperation between teachers and students.

The four-week program will be tailored making sure there will be enough
time for the students to gain enough practical experience. All the
practical exercises will be undertaken under constant supervision of a
senior conservator- restorer with ISCR degree to act as expert /tutor.
