The Walters Art Museum announces an opening for a permanent, full-time 
Assistant Paper Conservator in their Conservation Department. The Assistant 
Paper Conservator works under the direct supervision of the Head of Book and 
Paper Conservation. He/she is primarily responsible for the preservation and 
conservation of the Walters' collections of works on paper and related 
materials. She/he also partners with the Head of Book and Paper in caring for 
the manuscripts and printed books, and works with a team to make them 
accessible online through digitization. He/she plays an appropriate role in 
training emerging conservators by mentoring interns and fellows in his/her 
specialty and participates in public outreach and access efforts including the 
Walters Conservation Window and online collection cataloging.  The Assistant 
Paper Conservator works collaboratively with other departments in the Art and 
Program division to ideate, develop and implement exhibitions, installations, 
programs and other projects.
Responsibilities:

  *   Participate in preventive conservation and all that it entails, including 
monitoring, evaluating, and making recommendations for display and storage 
environments, pest management, rehousing, etc.
  *   Conducting condition surveys of the collections on a regular basis to 
prioritize needs, and carrying out emergency treatment on works that are 
actively deteriorating.
  *   Preparing examining, treating and documenting works in the collections 
for acquisition, loan and exhibition; consulting on environmental conditions, 
matting and framing, crating and transit for works traveling outside the museum.
  *   Acting as courier as required.
  *   Evaluating, obtaining and maintain equipment and materials needed to 
carry out conservation treatment and preventive maintenance to professionally 
accepted standards.
  *   Assist in writing grant proposals and overseeing grant projects to 
address priority preservation needs.
  *   Works with the museum's conservation scientist to carry out technical 
studies and analysis on works in the collections to determine materials, 
methods of manufacture and authenticity, contributing to databases for 
comparative studies, determining causes of deterioration and developing new 
treatment methodologies.
  *   Assist in mentoring fellows, interns, volunteers entering the 
conservation profession.
  *   Assist in training students in academic conservation training programs 
when requested and in organizing seminars and workshops on specialty subjects 
for conservation staff and other interested individuals.
  *   Work in the Conservation Window and contribute to the digitization and 
online cataloging of the collection.
  *   Supervise work of others in the Department in the absence of the Head of 
the Department.
Requirements:

  *   MA or MS in Art Conservation
  *   Minimum 3 years post-graduate experience
  *   Must have good grounding in conservation, scientific method, materials 
science, and environmental science literature
  *   Comprehensive knowledge of treatment methods, materials, preventive 
conservation principles and methodology
  *   Knowledge of art history and other subjects relevant to specialty
  *   Knowledge of ethical and practical professional standards
  *   Familiarity with analytical techniques, uses, and limitations
  *   Must have excellent conservation planning, decision-making, and hand 
skills for structural and aesthetic treatment; must have good research, 
documentation (writing and imaging) skills, teaching and administrative, oral 
and written communication skills; skills in research and analytical techniques 
and interpretation appropriate to specialty
  *   Must have some supervisory, mentoring, and evaluation skills
  *   Detail oriented
  *   Must have skills in Microsoft Office
