Textile Conservation Intern

Fixed term - 12 months

Full time, based at Hampton Court Palace

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of
London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, the Banqueting House, Kew
Palace and Hillsborough Castle and Gardens. We bring six extraordinary palaces
and their stories to life and we exist to stir every sprit in order to inspire.

Historic Royal Palaces, with the generous support of The Clothworkers'
Foundation, is offering three, one-year textile conservation internships from
2019-2022. These are offered to recent textile conservation graduates who are
passionate about embarking on a career in the sector and looking to build on
their practical skills in the specialist area of textile conservation.

The first placement is due to start in September 2019, with interviews held in
early August at Hampton Court Palace.

Based at Hampton Court Palace, the Intern will obtain critical insights and
hone their skills as they work alongside some of the country's leading
specialists in HRP's long established conservation studio. Working in this
unique environment, the interns will also gain experience in hands-on work,
preventive conservation and conservation science as well as business
disciplines including project management common to a busy conservation studio.
Successful applicants will be expected to be proactive in contributing to HRP's
communication activities that explain and promote our conservation work.

The placement will be managed through a framework based on conservation
professional standards. Interns will benefit from guidance and supervision from
PACR-accredited studio supervisors and regular mentoring from the Treatment
Conservation Manager who will monitor progress and measure achievement during
their learning experience.

A 12-month Intern will have one six-month placement on tapestry conservation
and choose another six-month placement in either the Furnishings or Costume and
General Textiles team.

Applicants must have an in-depth understanding of the techniques involve in
textile conservation and the ability to take on hands-on treatment. You must be
passionate about conservation and keen to develop your experience in this
specialism. Good team-working is essential and you must be able to work at
heights. Based at Hampton Court Palace you may be required to travel to our
other palaces on occasion.

Historic Royal Palaces is committed to building an organisation that truly
values the differences in people, whatever that difference may be: creed,
colour, nationality, ethnic origin, age, religion or similar belief, gender,
gender reassignment, sexual orientation, marital status, connections with a
national minority, property, birth or other status, family connections,
membership or non-membership of a trade union or disability.

As indicated above, we particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and
Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates as these groups are currently under
represented in our work force.

So whatever your background, if you have the skills, knowledge and attitude we
are looking for we would love to hear from you.
