In preparation for a future exhibition of Ethiopian art at the Walters Art Museum the curatorial and conservation departments are embarked on a three-year study of our Ethiopian collection. Our main areas of focus are Ethiopian paintings, illuminated manuscripts, Aksumite coins (from the 3rd-7th century CE), and metalwork processional and hand crosses. We are interested if anyone has undertaken research on Ethiopian artistic materials, most especially identifying the species of wood used for panel painting and book board substrates.
