WOOD IDENTIFICATION CLASS: What Wood Is It And Why?
Seeing and understanding wood in a whole new way.

Did you ever look at a piece of wood and wonder what wood it is? And why it
looks the way it does? Were you ever confused about which wood it is:
mahogany, walnut, cherry, or poplar? The determination may be easy if the
wood is unstained or unvarnished, but that is not always the case in
furniture.
This two-day hands-on workshop at the dynamic Mystic Seaport Museum is
taught by Randy S. Wilkinson and will answer all these questions and more.
It is designed specifically for curators, collectors, antique dealers,
appraisers, and conservators. The goal of this workshop is to familiarize
the student with the physical properties of wood in order to recognize
species specific cell structures. No experience is necessary.

* Saturday, October 26, 2019 | 9.00 am - 4.00 pm
On Saturday, basic wood anatomy will be introduced, including grain, figure,
fundamental differences between softwoods and hardwoods, and more. The
student will learn to identify common hardwoods that are used in antique
furniture using a 10x loupe.
* Sunday, October 27, 2019 | 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
On Sunday, the class will be held at the Mystic Seaport Museum. This will be
an interactive day of examination of woods present in 18th and 19th C.
objects. Special attention will be given to using reflected light
microscopy, rendering sampling of the wood unnecessary.
Class fee of $395.00 includes a hardwood sample kit, 10x loupe, book
(Identifying Wood by Bruce Hoadley) and Saturday lunch. A 10% discount is
offered to students, senior citizens, IWCS members, and prior Fallon &
Wilkinson students. Class size is limited to 15 students.
