I am pleased to share that in early September the University of
Pennsylvania Libraries (Philadelphia, PA) will be hosting a free,
NEH-sponsored event in two parts on “Identification and Preservation of
Inkjet Prints in Museums, Libraries, and Archives”. Led by Daniel Burge,
Senior Research Scientist from the Image Permanence Institute (IPI) at the
Rochester Institute of Technology, the event includes:

* a public lecture on Wednesday September 11th from 5-7pm (free, open to
public)
*  a day-long workshop on Thursday September 12th from 9am-5pm (free,
seating is limited to 15 participants)

Please find more details and registration for one or both of the events
here:  http://www.library.upenn.edu/about/exhibits-events/inkjet-prints

The events will surely be of great interest to the preservation and
conservation community and appeal to staff from a broad spectrum of roles —
catalogers, curators, archivists, librarians, conservators, technicians,
registrars, exhibition designers, and more.

Topics to be covered:
* What is an inkjet print?
* The history of inkjet printing
* The technologies behind the most popular inkjet printing devices
* The varieties of inks, coatings, and papers
* The multiplicity of inkjet print formats
* How to identify important inkjet print variations
* Types of deterioration and most susceptible inkjet print types
* Recommended best practices for care based on IPI’s most recent research
including storage, housing, handling, display and water emergency response
* Descriptive terminology and media naming conventions
* Additional resources and tools

More information about inkjet prints and the Image Permanence Institute can
