The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (UK) is currently seeking to recruit a 
Research Scientist specialising in the analysis of archaeological and 
historical metal. 
  
 Salary range 30,942 - 40,322
  
 Twelve-month contract starting January 2020
  
 The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and antiquities 
of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a million objects in its 
care. It is also one of the eight museums that comprise the University of 
Cambridge  Museums consortium (UCM). The successful candidate will take up a 
new post specifically for the scientific analysis of archaeological and 
historic metal objects across various Museum Departments. Notably, as part of a 
major research and exhibition initiative,  the post-holder will be involved in 
a special project undertaking technical and scientific investigation of ancient 
Cypriot metalwork from within the Department of Antiquities collections.
  
 Under the supervision of the Fitzwilliam's Senior Research Scientist, the 
role-holder will investigate and document individual objects with a combination 
of invasive and non-invasive spectroscopic and imaging tools. As necessary, 
specific  training for the combined, mutually complementary use of different 
examinational and analytical methods will be provided. The work will include 
data collection, processing and interpretation. Contribution to publications 
will be encouraged.
  
 Candidates should hold a PhD in archaeological science, cultural heritage 
science or materials science, or equivalent research experience. They should be 
familiar with a range of imaging and spectroscopic methods for the scientific 
analysis  of metals, as specified in the Further Particulars document.
  
 A collaborative, supportive and flexible team working style is essential. The 
ability to deal with people at all levels and in a professional manner is 
crucial. A high degree of IT literacy, including the use of software for data 
acquisition  and analysis and image processing, is required. Familiarity with 
archaeological and archaeometallurgical research in the prehistory of the 
Eastern Mediterranean would be an advantage.
  
 Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first 
instance.
