Many people think of conservation and preservation work as happening "behind
the scenes." When mentioned in the media, conservation professionals are often
cited as "the conservator," if at all. This makes conservation seem opaque and
inaccessible and doesn't acknowledge you: the people doing that essential work.

We want to encourage conservation professionals to directly engage with a wider
audience, breaking down those perceived barriers between the field and the
public.

To address this, we are holding the first Ask a Conservator Day
<https://www.culturalheritage.org/about-conservation/what-is-conservation/conservation-in-social-media/ask-a-conservator-day>,
which will take place on November 4th, 2019. This is a significant day: on
November 4th, 1966, the Arno river flooded Florence, damaging priceless
cultural heritage. As we acknowledge and celebrate the growth of the field
inspired by that event, we want to use social media to create an opportunity
for increasing public awareness of conservation.

By using the hashtag #AskAConservator on social media platforms, (such as
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram) we can provide a more holistic view
of what conservation entails-everything from individual conservators working in
private practice to multiple departments at large institutions. This concept
has been successfully used by curators and other professions, and many social
media users are already familiar with this format.

However, to truly show a representative picture of conservation, we need your
help! We would like you to promote this event on your social media accounts and
participate in any way that feels appropriate. This could include making
yourself available to answer questions about conservation on your personal
social media, working with your institution to use their social media handles
to engage with their audiences, or answering questions on a livestream from
your lab.

You can find more information about the event and how to participate on our
website
<https://www.culturalheritage.org/about-conservation/what-is-conservation/conservation-in-social-media/ask-a-conservator-day>.
We've made sample images and graphics to use in promoting the event. Please
share this widely with colleagues around the world!
