Department: Preservation

Classification: Exempt, Full-Time Regular Limited Term, 37.5 hours. This is a 
three-year position with the possibility of extension.

Summary

The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens seeks a collaborative 
Project Conservator to join our preservation team. The Preservation Department 
at the Huntington includes book, paper, and paintings conservators who support 
the rich collections of the Library and Art Divisions.

The Project Conservator will carry out conservation work to support the 
digitization of books and paper-based materials within the Library and Art 
collections. They will also work with the Preservation team to prepare books 
and paper-based collections including; books, manuscripts, archival materials, 
and works of art on paper for exhibition and loan. The Project Conservator 
reports to the Senior Book and Paper Conservator and works successfully with 
diverse staff at many levels across the institution in a team-oriented 
environment where collaboration and shared ideas are the norm.

Essential Functions




Assesses condition and handling needs of materials selected for digitization 
and provides conservation support for digital projects.

Works with the digitization team and the Senior Book and Paper Conservator to 
help coordinate digital projects across multiple departments.

Examines, analyzes, and performs both basic and complex conservation treatments 
and housing for a broad range of paper-based library and art materials, 
including books, bound and unbound manuscripts, works on paper, and parchment 
in accordance with AIC guidelines.

Provides full written and photographic documentation of treatments in 
accordance with AIC guidelines. Prepares condition assessments, conducts 
surveys, and provides other written reports as necessary.

Contributes to permanent and rotating exhibits including reviewing materials, 
making recommendations, and performing treatment. Reviews and prepares 
materials for incoming and outgoing loans.

Working with other staff, develops and implements preservation and treatment 
strategies at the collection level. Participates and assists in coordinating 
disaster response and recovery activities.  

Assists in general organization and maintenance of conservation laboratory. 
Researches and recommends laboratory equipment and supplies. 

Conducts or assists with workshops, seminars, and other training. May train and 
supervise interns.

Other Functions

Qualifications




Master's degree from a graduate training program in conservation preferred.

Thorough knowledge of conservation theory and practice, and materials science 
as it applies to books and paper-based materials.

Ability to perform complex conservation treatments on a broad range of books, 
archival materials, and works of art on paper, as demonstrated through a 
portfolio.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Evidence of professional activity, most typically through membership and 
participation in AIC.

Experience




One to five years professional experience in the conservation of books and 
paper-based materials, working with art, rare books, and/or special collections 
materials in an institutional setting.

The Huntington is one of the world's great independent research libraries in 
the fields of British and American history, literature, art, and history of 
science, stretching from the 11th century to the present. It is located 30 
miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the city of San Marino. Conservators at 
the Huntington work in a well-equipped, modern 10,000 square foot laboratory on 
the second floor of the Munger Research Center.
