Dear colleagues, I have a question concerning the use of Plastazote foam as a stabilizing materiale for photographic materials: I'm currently preparing a larger photographic collection for a move to new storage facilities, and considering using Plastazote as a foam for stabilizing collodion glassplate negatives and Daguerreo-, ambro- and ferrotypes in boxes. Plastazote from the conservation providers PEL in UK and GWB in Germany is said to be PAT tested and chemically inert. Though the datasheet says it is not recommended that it is used in connection with concentrated nitric or sulphuric acid.Unfortunately, due to improper space and facilities, we are not able to completely separate all of the glassplate and camera originals from nitrate and acetate negatives in our upcoming cold storage (+4oC). We will have good airconditioning, and we will use airabsorpant envelopes. Still I'm critical of the development of nitric gasses, since the storage temperature is not under 0oC. My concern therefore is whether nitric gasses from nitrate negatives might have an influence on the Plastazote, and whether this could cause deterioration of the glassplate/camera originals. Do any of you have any experiences in the use of Plastazote in environments with nitrate negatives? Or could you recommend other materials for the support, besides Ethafoam? Hope to hear from you! Thanks a lot !
