The Walters Art Museum, located in the historic Mount Vernon district in 
Baltimore, offers challenging and creative work opportunities by promoting

We are currently seeking a student or recent graduate to join our Conservation 
team as an pre-program intern this 2020 spring semester (beginning January 
2020).


The goal of the WAM pre-program internship is to provide a training opportunity 
for students with an interest in conservation. The position provides close 
mentoring by WAM conservation staff affording a chance to gain experience in a 
museum setting. The internship offers an opportunity to introduce the many 
parameters of the profession of conservation working with objects, paintings, 
works on paper and manuscripts; including hands-on practical work, art 
historical research, preventive maintenance, and scientific study.


Under the supervision of the conservators and related staff, the intern will 
participate in the following activities related to the WAM permanent collection:



Gain exposure with assessing condition and documenting artworks
Gain exposure with examination of works with non-destructive analytical 
techniques
Gain a general understanding of treatment materials and techniques and assist 
with development of treatment protocols
Gain knowledge through selected readings and discussion
Participate in routine preventive conservation
Gain exposure with minor treatments to build a portfolio
Participate in daily activities of the Conservation Department





Qualifications





Our ideal candidate is enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an undergraduate 
academic program for Art, Art History or Science, and has an interest in 
conservation.
Proven hand skills and attention to detail are required.
Must be available 2 days per week (either Monday or Tuesday and one other 
weekday).
The position is 12 hours per week for 16 weeks.
The internship includes a $3,000 stipend.
