Hello,

I would be extremely grateful if you could post this event notice on behalf of
ICON Contemporary.

Very best wishes

ICON Contemporary presents Light, Sound and Movement

ICON Contemporary is delighted to welcome you to our inaugural Group event,
which will be presented online on 5 December 13:00 14:00 UK time.

We will hear from three speakers who will present on specific case studies and
consider how conservation thinking and practice is responding to objects that
incorporate light, sound or movement. In what ways do modern and contemporary
sculptures perform? How are supposedly "static" objects or their materials in
fact animated, how is the sound, light or movement activated?, and how might
these objects be further understood by conservators? In what ways does
exhibition, display, research, and other forms of engagement make these
objects come alive?

Following on from the presentations, our 3 speakers will then join a panel
followed by an open discussion with you, our audience.

Our speakers are:

Alice Watkins, Sculpture & Installation Art Conservator, Tate, will speak about
Hamad Butt's sculpture, Substance Sublimation Unit. She will provide an
overview of the work, its display history and issues, along with the
conservation solutions that have evolved over the years as Tate's understanding
of the piece has developed.

Manon Abt, Doctoral Student UCL, will speak about the reconstruction of Edward
Ihnatowicz's early computer based sculpture The Senster, which forms one of the
case studies in her doctoral research. The reconstruction was conducted by Anna
Olszewska and Marek Dlugosz within the newly established Faculty of the
Humanities at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. She will
consider the reconstruction of these early technology-based works outside the
museum, the drivers behind this project and how such reconstructions might be
similar and different to the work carried out by conservators working within a
museum context.

Lorraine Maule, Senior Paintings Conservator (with installation and performance
art), National Galleries of Scotland will speak generally about light, movement
and performative objects in the collection of the National Galleries of
Scotland. She will then concentrate on 2 works: Self-Portrait by Helen
Chadwick featuring research undertaken by Kirsten Dunne and the NGS Replication
Committee, examining integral light sources as a catalyst for deterioration;
and La Jalousie II [Blind Jealousy II] by Jean Tinguely exploring the
sculpture's own performance and performance involving human interaction.

We encourage you to tune in while you eat your lunch!

Subject: Job Opening: Paintings Conservator, Modern Art Conservation, NYC
Message: Modern Art Conservation, a large, New York City-based, woman-owned
conservation practice, is seeking a full-time paintings conservator to join our
dynamic team. The studio specializes in the examination and treatment of late
19th century, modern, and contemporary paintings and painted objects. Our
clients include museums, galleries, private and corporate collections, auction
houses, art fairs, artist estates/foundations, and contemporary artists. The
team comprises conservators, technicians/preparators, a conservation
photographer, and registrars/administrators. Our bright beautiful studios are
located in the Chelsea arts district in a landmark building with numerous
amenities.

Responsibilities will include conservation assessment, research, treatment, and
documentation of individual artworks and large collections. The applicant must
be skilled in the practical treatment of paintings and painted surfaces,
possess knowledge of preventive conservation practices, and have a strong
interest in technical art history and in writing detailed condition reports.
The applicant should enjoy collaborating and problem-solving with colleagues,
be able to communicate effectively in written and oral form with a wide range
of individuals, have strong interpersonal skills, show diplomacy and judgment,
be open to learning and sharing, and be able to work on multiple projects
simultaneously, calmly, and effectively under tight deadlines.

The applicant must be a graduate of a recognized conservation training program
and demonstrate a career interest in the conservation of paintings and/or
painted objects.  Conservators of traditional easel paintings or painted
objects are encouraged to apply, but a strong interest in developing a
specialization in modern and contemporary paintings is desired. Candidates
should be knowledgeable in art history and have an interest in working in a
fast-paced environment in which time is spent on treatments and condition
reporting for clients both in and outside the studio. We value stability and
seek candidates who are looking to join a close-knit team, grow professionally
in the position, and form a long-term work relationship. Excellent speaking,
reading, and writing skills in English are required.

Salary ranges from $58,000 - $85,000 commensurate with experience. Benefits
include 100% paid health insurance, matching 401k contributions, continuing
education opportunities, paid vacation, paid holidays including the week
between Christmas and New Years, and bonuses/raises subject to revenue and
performance. Candidates must be able to work in the US (we cannot sponsor any
visas at this time). The position is available as early as January 2025 but
there is a lot of flexibility to the start date for the right candidate. We are
open to an August/September 2025 start for those on the academic cycle.

Please email a detailed letter of interest, a PDF of your CV with three
professional references listed, two sample treatment reports, and two sample
condition reports to [email protected] with "Conservator Position
2025" in the subject line. Application materials will be kept confidential. No
calls or walk-ins, please. Only qualified applicants will be contacted.
Application review begins November 25th and will remain open until the position
is filled.
