The American Museum of Natural History, Science Conservation department is 
seeking a part-time term Conservation Intern to provide support for the 
IMLS-funded project Conserving, Rehousing and Reunifying the Invaluable 
Elephant and Bovid Specimens at the American Museum of Natural History. The 
project will upgrade the care and management of the Museum's collection of 
nearly 100 African and Asian elephant skulls and significantly enhance its 
accessibility and opportunities for research use. Collected during some of the 
most famous field expeditions of the early 20th century, the collection has 
enormous historical and scientific importance to Museum audiences and is among 
the largest in the country (in both number and size).

The position will last for an appointment term of 18 months. The Intern will 
work under the Project Director, within the Science Conservation department, 
and as part of the larger project team. They will carry out efforts focused on 
stabilization, rehousing, cleaning and documentation of elephant crania.

Ideal candidates will possess the capacity for meticulous care in the handling 
of collections materials, strong written/verbal communication skills and 
organizational/problem-solving competencies.

Job duties include:



Work with the project team to complete basic examination, as well as 
conservation treatment and documentation activities including cleaning, 
rehousing and archiving of conservation records.

Support various other project activities, including the research and testing of 
materials and methods in support of treatment, stabilization and rehousing of 
specimens, preparation and procurement of materials and tools used in 
conservation treatment and related administrative tasks.

Contribute to the development and dissemination of content communicating 
project findings to collection care audiences outside the Museum via the 
generation of webpage updates, blog posts, conference presentations, posters, 
etc.

The expected salary for the Conservation Intern is $25/hour. This position is 
overtime-eligible.

Required Qualifications:




Bachelor's degree in fine arts, the humanities or the sciences.

One year of related museum work experience.

Seeking to enter or advance in the field of conservation through graduate study 
or other professional development.


Preferred Qualifications:




Familiarity with conservation issues and procedures related to handling, 
examination, treatment and/or documentation of museum collection items similar 
to those within the scope of this project.

Digital photography skills.


Physical Demands:




Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for 
prolonged periods.

Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

Must be able to move about the Museum campus.

Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position 
oneself/body to accomplish job duties.



Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.

Icon is delighted to announce that award-winning journalist and broadcaster 
Samira Ahmed will be the speaker for our annual lecture. The online event, 
taking place on Wednesday, 4th December from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, will explore 
the value placed on heritage and its role in shaping the modern world.



In Icon's sixth annual lecture Blue Plaques, anniversaries, and the art of 
reporting heritage, award-winning journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed will 
discuss her career reporting on heritage, and what the public response reveals 
about the modern world and the future of heritage.

The lecture will take place online on Wednesday 4 December, 6pm to

Drawing on more than 30 years in broadcast news, Samira will reflect on a wide 
range of UK and international heritage conservation stories she's covered over 
the decades, including the changing attitude to Los Angeles' pre-war picture 
palaces and her visits to several of Iran's 22 UNESCO heritage sites during the 
filming of her 2020 BBC4 documentary series Art of Persia.


A member of Historic England's national Blue Plaques advisory board, Samira – 
who uncovered the earliest complete UK concert recording by The Beatles after 
spotting an unofficial blue plaque at Stowe School two years ago - will examine 
what preserving and marking our historic buildings reveals about a nation's 
sense of self, and what the safeguarding of heritage means to younger 
generations.


Known as the presenter of BBC 1's Newswatch, BBC R4's Front Row and a regular 
writer for the Guardian, Observer and New Humanist, Samira will also share her 
experience of reporting on the 200th birthday of the National Gallery, the 
launch of the national Blue Plaques scheme and the proposed A303 tunnel beneath 
the Stonehenge UNESCO World Heritage Site.


Samira will explore these stories and more, sharing insights into the level of 
public engagement and the surprisingly varied responses she has seen.

The Conservation Department within the Museum Resources Division (MRD) for the 
State of New Mexico is seeking to fill the position of Paper Conservator.

About the Organization and Department
The Conservation Department is a unit of the Museum Resources Division (MRD) 
within the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). MRD is comprised of 
skilled museum specialists that serve multiple New Mexico state-run museums and 
historic sites and includes conservators, designers, woodworkers, mount makers, 
preparators, writers, editors, and educators. The Conservation Department is 
responsible for the preservation of the cultural materials in the Museums of 
New Mexico system, including the Museum of International Folk Art, New Mexico 
History Museum/Palace of the Governors, New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of 
Indian Arts and Culture, and seven state historic sites.

Job Summary
The paper conservator plays a critical role in providing paper conservation 
services for the departments within DCA to ensure the conservation and 
preservation of the state's cultural heritage. Conservators work in concert 
with MRD staff as well as museum and historic site curators, collections 
managers and outside contractors. They carry out treatments and 
technical/scholarly research as well as consult on exhibitions, loans, 
accessioning/deaccessioning, and general collections care. Additionally, 
conservators work on special grant-funded projects, train museum, staff and 
interns in best practices, and participate in consultations with artists and 
descendent community members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
·      The Paper Conservator participates in all aspects of an active 
conservation department and will be primarily responsible for developing 
treatment proposals with accurate hour and materials estimates, consulting with 
curatorial, collections and exhibitions staff, and carrying out treatments in 
accordance with conservation ethics and best practices.

·      Conduct and document conservation assessments of objects as requested, 
including objects being considered for accession and deaccession and for 
exhibition and treatment prioritization.

·      Participate in day-to-day lab operations, including treatment time 
management, ordering supplies and materials, handling written and photographic 
documentation and collaboratively maintaining lab space and equipment.

·      Work with Head of Conservation and department conservators to identify 
lab space and equipment needs towards creating increased capacity for paper 
treatments within the existing conservation labs

Desired Candidate Qualifications: Education and Experience
·      Master's degree in Conservation from an accredited program with 3 years 
of post-graduate experience with demonstrated abilities in examination, 
analysis, documentation, and treatment of paper artwork and artifacts.

·      Ability to create, implement, and manage project timelines, task 
management, and schedules for the paper conservation activities

·      Knowledge of digital imaging equipment, practices and software, as well 
as databases and software related to condition reporting, documentation digital 
asset management.

·      Conversant in technical analysis of objects using a range of tools and 
techniques including multispectral imaging, XRF, FTIR, microscopy, etc.

·      Ability to work effectively and collegially with personnel across the 
museum.

·      The position is performed primarily within the two conservation labs, 
with occasional time spent collection storage and exhibition spaces of the 
museums and historic sites.

·      Some travel within the state is required to meet the obligations of the 
position.

·      Candidate must be authorized to work in the U.S. at the time of 
application

Compensation
Salary: $19.82 - $31.71 hourly or $41,218 - $65,949 annually

Benefits: The State of New Mexico provides a competitive employee benefits 
package that includes: employer-paid medical contributions, pension (PERA 
retirement) contributions, paid leave allowances for vacation days, sick days 
and paid holidays. Additionally, State employees can take advantage of a
