Subject: Thesis Project Survey: Stewardship of Contested Cultural Heritage
Message: My name is Greta Llanes Serrano, and I am currently pursuing a
master's degree in art conservation at SUNY Buffalo State University. As part
of my thesis, I am conducting a research investigation and critical review of
legal and ethical frameworks related to the stewardship of contested cultural
heritage, with a specific focus on repatriating Benin cultural heritage. With
this survey, I am seeking guidance from collection caretakers to explore the
ethical concerns surrounding photo documentation and non-invasive and invasive
analytical investigations of contested cultural heritage. Please follow this
link
<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=RIMYxx9iH02jxmUhzBLuolRul9jfTN9PqdkGL3eIh2NUNjFEQkxRWjJBSjgyMjBKTzRZMFVNRUEzSi4u>
 to contribute to the survey.

Survey Introduction:
The survey is intended for conservators, registrars, curators and others who
are responsible for managing collections that contain contested cultural
artifacts, which may involve disputes over ownership or rightful stewardship.
The questions aim to explore how the field is currently engaging and
interacting with these materials, focusing on decision-making processes related
to photo documentation, technical analysis, and the exhibition of these
objects. I am particularly interested in understanding where these practices
align and misalign with the values, needs and wishes of communities from which
these objects originate.

participation.

Thanks so much Steve. Oh wow, 10K is quite the commitment! For those following
this thread here is a link

to what Conservation Resources has in stock. Caroline, I'm not sure whether
this really solves the problem posed in your initial post, but thanks so much
for bringing this topic up.

Rebecca,
Conservation Resources, in Springfield VA has a large supply of the medium
sized tubes with the long tapered nozzles/applicators.

I sourced tubes years ago from a manufacturer in Canada but you had to buy
10,000 to start.

Hi Steve -

Could you share where you have sourced these from? I have had difficulty
finding them myself. I have a precious few left of the type you recommend and
teach with, with the very fine, pointed, white plastic applicator nozzle that
screws on. I believe I picked them up from a colleague at AIC many years ago
following a talk (@Ariel O'Connor was that you?). I was able to find some with
an integrated aluminum applicator years ago (similar to this
<https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Stock-5ml-high-quality-white-plain_1600524697692.html>),
but it was a shorter nozzle with a rounded end and wider hole, which was not
great for thin break edges!

Thanks so much,

Rebecca

I do not understand what you really need.

I have thousands of tubes and nozzles for B-72.

Please contact me directly: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Hi All,I was wondering if anyone had a UK source of nozzles that would fit on a
small paint tube? I'm making my own Paraloid B72 adhesive (thanks to Stephen
Koob's instructions) and have aluminium tubes with a 7mm diameter opening.
However I would like to have an applicator type nozzle on it (like the HMG
tubes) to make it easier to use on site, but can't seem to find
any.Thanks,Caroline

that the nozzles seldom get blocked and are easy to clear with a little acetone
when they do. Best wishes Helena

Thanks Helena,

They do look nicer to hold than a tube too! Can I check that they don't get
blocked, or the Paraloid dries up? I think I've been veering towards the tubes
as they don't let any air in.

I've been using needle tip applicators (polythene bottle, polythene nozzle or
metal needle tip) for Paraloid B72 for years. They can be refilled many times,
easily cleaned and you have a choice of volumes and nozzle sizes. You can find
them on ebay or art stores like

Learning from Our Mistakes"
 Message:
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Thomas Edison

"Failure is success in progress."  Albert Einstein

Please join us for "A Failure Shared is Not a Failure: Learning from Our
Mistakes", our 8th annual event. It will be held as the closing session of the
AIC Annual meeting at 5 pm CDT on Saturday, May 31st. This session will take
place both in-person in Minneapolis and virtually. It's always challenging,
hilarious, sad, fun, sobering, and reassuring all at once!

This year, the session will immediately follow the Business Meeting, right in
the same room. And there will be a cash bar!

Please submit a 2-3 sentence summary of your proposed topic to Tony Sigel
([email protected]) and Kari Rayner ([email protected]). Presentations
should be no longer than 8 minutes; images or PowerPoints are welcome but not
required. A change this year is that while the event will be live streamed and
recorded, as all sessions are, it will NOT be included in Postprints, and will
NOT be posted online for posterity on YouTube. What happens in the room, stays
in the room!

If you are attending the meeting virtually but would still like to present, we
encourage you to participate and will pre-record your talk on Zoom. If you'd
like to submit a talk but would prefer to remain anonymous, the moderators can
present on your behalf.
