Call for Presentations – AICCM National Conference 2025

We are excited to welcome you to participate in this year's Australian
Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material (AICCM) National Conference
to be held at the State Library of Queensland, Kurilpa | South Brisbane,
Australia from 12 - 14 November, 2025

The theme for the 2025 conference is

More than Materials: Collaborative Approaches in Cultural Heritage
Conservation

Cultural heritage conservation is a complex field that involves many diverse
communities. It is built on material expertise, context and the relationships
that shape our work. Whether we analyse pigments, stabilise historic textiles,
design exhibition displays, or work directly with communities to safeguard
living traditions, we recognise that cultural materials are deeply connected to
people, place, and knowledge systems.

As AICCM continues to learn and grow in its cultural responsibilities, this
conference is an opportunity to bring together all aspects of our work -
scientific, material, ethical, cultural and relational. It marks an important
step in strengthening relationships with First Nations and all communities to
embed cultural perspectives and build stronger, more culturally informed
conservation practices together.

We invite proposals from members and colleagues across diverse conservation
interests which contribute to the topics of this meeting:

Community-Led Approaches in Conservation - Collaborative methods that bring
communities and professionals together

Relational Responsibility in Conservation - Integrating knowledge, ethics, and
cultural responsibility in conservation

Material Knowledge & Technical Innovations in Conservation - Advancing our
understanding of materials to inform conservation practice

Presentations will be scheduled for approximately 15 minutes, followed by time
for questions. We also welcome proposals for other types of presentations such
as performance or film/audio visual screening. There will be no hard copy
posters, but instead we are inviting submissions for PowerPoint Posters - a
three-slide PowerPoint presentation to be displayed as a slide show. These will
also be available on the AICCM website. Three-minute poster pitch sessions will
be scheduled in the auditorium as part of the conference programme if you wish
to present your poster.

For more information on the conference and how to submit a proposal, please
visit the AICCM website https://aiccm.org.au/aiccm-conference-2025/
<https://aiccm.org.au/aiccm-conference-2025/>

Submissions close 16 May 2025

 Subject: Seeking papyrus for purchase
 Message:
Dear community,

Our lab is looking to consult some reliable sources that provide access to
papyri for purchase. We are hosting an REU summer group of students and want to
provide them with the opportunity to experiment with papyri.

Many thanks,

Monica

Subject: Looking for resources for crazing shellac finishes
Message: I’m a 25+ year antique furniture restorer and conservator. Although I
have several methods of inducing craquelure/crazing on new finishes, especially
shellac, I was hoping someone could help me shed light on any techniques they
may have for replicating this. I often have to match new finish to old.
Is there a conservation coatings chemist I may contact?
I realize this is an off the wall question.

Thanks ,

Subject: Contemporary Art Review Volume 3 (2023)
Message: On behalf of the Contemporary Art Network (CAN!) we are happy to
release Volume 3 (2023) of the Contemporary Art Review, available for free on
the AIC website here:
https://resources.culturalheritage.org/contemporaryartreview/volume-3-2023/
<https://resources.culturalheritage.org/contemporaryartreview/volume-3-2023/>

The volume includes four articles:

Caroline Carlsmith's article "Archeology of the Timeline: Preservation
Considerations for Digital Process Files" considers how to document and
preserve artists' layered and time-based digital working files (i.e., those
made in Adobe After Effects or other production software).

Jessica Pace and Lou DiGennaro's extended abstract "Artist Interviews and
Artist Books: The Impact of Artist Interviews on Book Treatments" describes how
artist interviews informed treatments on books made of unusual materials like
cheese and concrete.

Soon Kai Poh, Andy Wolf, and Lynda Zycherman's article "Fluid Dynamics:
Installing and Maintaining Michael Stevenson's The Fountain of Prosperity"
describes a complex and precarious kinetic sculpture recently displayed at MoMA.

Luciana Murcia's article "A History of a Painting: Working with the Artist to
Plan a Respectful Intervention" describes working with the Argentine artist
Luis Felipe Noé to conserve one of his major paintings.

Just before announcing the publication of this volume, we learned that Luis
Felipe Noé (May 26, 1933-April 9, 2025) has just passed away. Luciana's article
is therefore dedicated to acknowledging his legacy as one of the most important
figures in Argentine art.

CAN! would especially like to thank the team of reviewers, editors, and Spanish
translators who contributed to this volume: Susan Costello, Dan Finn, Walter
Forsberg, Per Knutås, Mareike Opeña, Katrina Posner, Beatriz Haspo and the team
at APOYOnline: Amparo Rueda, David Cohen, María del Rosario Mollinedo, Mirasol
Estrada, Mónica Pérez, Ramón Sánchez, Soledad Tancoff, Vera de la Cruz and
Irene Delaveris.
