most commonly, pose challenges to conservators and conservation technicians.
Tate standard processes and materials for mounting and framing works on paper
are discussed as are ways that these methods are adapted on a large scale.

This presentation is illustrated with practical examples in the form of various
case studies.

Simon Philpott is Senior Conservation Technician (Paper and Photographs) at
Tate. He currently manages a small team of technicians who prepare works on
paper and photographs for Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and the

conservators on projects including preparing works for safe storage. Simon has
a MA in Contemporary Fine Art and before joining Tate ten years ago, he had
worked primarily in artists’ studios fabricating artworks.

Subject: RE: Recommendations for Re-gilding Techniques for Porcelain?
 Message:
Aloha Halina,

I have used the 5 min epoxy (Devcon) that Jonathan Thornton has suggested, but
in my experience is a bit too viscous and harder to get a thin enough film of
it before applying the leaf.  It certainly does work however.  I have used
Epo-Tek 301 applied very thinly w/ good results.  The working window is much
longer and if you try it, do some testing on your samples and log your times.
The Epo-Tek is much less viscous than the 5 min. epoxy. I would suggest
applying on several areas of your test sample and find when the correct time to
lay the leaf will be.  Hope this helps.

Subject: Recommendations for Re-gilding Techniques for Porcelain?

Hi there,

I am currently working on a partially gilded Meissen tea caddy at the Cooper
Hewitt with discrete areas of loss and abrasion to the gilded borders. I'm
wondering if anyone has had any success with techniques for re-gilding as loss
compensation on porcelain that they would be willing to share. I have made some
porcelain mockups for testing specifically for this project, and I plan to
share the results of these tests after the project is complete. If you have any
suggestions these will be credited to you in the write-up. Thanks so much in
advance for your help with this!

Subject: Survey on fixing water-sensitive media (paper objects)
 Message:
Dear All,

I am a student of art conservation and restoration (speciality: conservation
and restoration of books, prints and antique leather) at the Academy of Fine
Arts in Warsaw. As part of my MA thesis, I am conducting a 10 to 15 minutes
long, anonymous survey concerning the issues associated with fixing
water-sensitive media during the conservation of paper objects. To make it more
well-rounded - I wish to gain international opinion.
Therefore, if you have some time to spare, please consider completing the
survey. Your answers will help to gauge the current approach to the use of
different fixing agents as well as to form an overall opinion of paper
conservators concerning those substances. The survey results will also aid me
in developing a meaningful research question in the experimental part of the
thesis.

The survey will be open for two weeks.

give. Thank you!
