Message: CFP | Participation and Community Involvement in the
Conservation of Contemporary Art in Institutional Collections / ICOM-CC Virtual
Joint Interim Meeting

We are pleased to announce the Call for Presentations for a Virtual Joint
Interim Meeting organised by ICOM-CC's Theory, History, and Ethics of
Conservation Working Group and the Modern Materials and Contemporary Art
Working Group. The meeting will explore community participation in the
conservation of contemporary art within institutional collections. It will be
free and open to both members and non-members.

Title: Participation and Community Involvement in the Conservation of
Contemporary Art in Institutional Collections
 Date: 19 February 2026
 Where: ICOM-CC Zoom platform

We invite proposals for 15-minute presentations highlighting both successful
and unsuccessful examples of participation and community involvement in the
conservation of contemporary art in public collections. The goal of the meeting
is to examine how contemporary art conservation practices are involving
communities, the value of "expert knowledge" in these settings, and the
challenges that arise in practice. How do institutional practices maintain
professional standards while working with communities, and what roles do
conservation professionals assume in these contexts? What does community
participation look like beyond the assumed binary between conservation
professionals and "non-experts"? How are diverse perspectives brought together,
and how is (or isn't) consensus achieved?
While the meeting aims to map existing practices, we also welcome
presentations showcasing projects and initiatives currently under development,
slated for implementation in the near future.

Message: Best Practices in the Disinfection of Cultural Heritage Artefacts and
Archives Using Ionizing Radiation | IAEA
<https://www.iaea.org/publications/15831/best-practices-in-the-disinfection-of-cultural-heritage-artefacts-and-archives-using-ionizing-radiation>

Cultural heritage artifacts hold immense historical and societal value, as they
reflect the origins, identity and essence of multiple generations. However, the
organic materials in these artifacts are prone to biodegradation, accelerated
by factors like climate change. To address this issue, the IAEA has supported
extensive research into radiation technology as a viable means of safeguarding
and conserving cultural heritage. This publication serves as a manual for
cultural heritage protection, bridging the gap between radiation science and
heritage conservation and explaining how radiation treatments offer swift,
effective disinfection that surpass conventional methods. From climate change
challenges to interdisciplinary collaborations, this publication empowers
professionals to preserve our rich cultural legacy. It will be especially
useful for radiation technologists who interact directly with various
stakeholders, including cultural heritage professionals, conservators and those
individuals responsible for collections. In addition, it will be of interest
to providers of irradiation services and to beginners who are encountering
radiation technology application in the field of cultural heritage protection
and conservation for the first time.
