Hi Adrienne,

One way of dealing with off gassing archival documents which are encapsulated
is to support with Microchamber (The board contain zeolites which are molecular
traps which collect airborne acidic pollutant gases).

Hello Adrienne,

Typically, conservators do not recommend deacidification. All items must be
assessed individually, and I have never endorsed their routine use in any
institution-certainly not for artwork.

It's important to remember that deacidification spray is preventative, not
restorative, and it only provides a superficial level of treatment. The only
material I might even consider using it on broadly is newer newsprint, and even
then, I have reservations. The most effective preventive measures remain proper
storage conditions and appropriate housing materials.

If an item is in good condition and encapsulated within a stable environment,
it will remain safe. However, there are alternative options, such as
encapsulating with buffered paper, leaving the encapsulation open enough to
allow air exchange, storing items in cold storage, or limiting light exposure.
Buffered interleaving papers, boards, and other materials can also be
beneficial.

There is extensive literature and research available on deacidification, and I
encourage reviewing it further. A few references are listed below (though not
comprehensive), and much additional research is published in Europe.

The Department of Preservation and Conservation Services, University Libraries,
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is interested in whether
institutions are non-aqueously deacidifying materials prior to encapsulation or
not. Any research, protocols, or thoughts supporting the decision would be
appreciated. Responses can be sent directly to [email protected]
<[email protected]>; if there is any interest from other institutions,
responses can be compiled for anonymity and shared.
